Act NOW to Save EE Funding!

EE Supporters:

The legislature’s Joint Finance Committee will be taking up UW funding on Friday, May 29.  Their agenda includes the items related to environmental education.

Legislators act when they hear from their constituents.  And that means we need to do all we can to ensure that our friends and allies are talking to JFC members.

I know it’s easy to think somebody else will take care of this but you are the somebody we need acting. You know environmental education matters and we need your voice. Please email or call members of Joint Finance; please encourage your colleagues, friends, family…especially those who are constituents of specific JFC members…to advocate for WEEB, WCEE and the DPI position. Talking points, letter templates and more

1. The legislative fiscal bureau paper related to WEEB is paper #488 and is available here: http://legis.wisconsin.gov/lfb/publications/budget/2015-17%20Budget/Documents/Budget%20Papers/488.pdf   It has been modified from before.

Our preferred option is A2a, A2b, B1a and C2

However, if we can avoid having the WEEB eliminated and the grant funding restored, we will not be too particular about which state fund the money comes from or whether it comes to the Board through UW-System or the DNR.

The following options would also be fine:

A2a, A2b, B1b, C2

A3, B1a, C2

A2, B1b, C2

What we would prefer not to  happen is A1 and C1.

2. The legislative fiscal bureau paper related to the DPI EE consultant position is paper #678.

It is available here: http://legis.wisconsin.gov/lfb/publications/budget/2015-17%20Budget/Documents/Budget%20Papers/678.pdf

The relevant portion is labeled “Environmental Program Grants and Scholarships” and includes items #12, #13, and #14.

Our preferred option is D2 and either D2a or D2b

Adding the following options would be fine.

D2a—this is a bit ambiguous because the option directs funds to UW-Stevens Point indicating this is current law, but actually some of the funds currently are directed to UW-Madison.

D2b–using the funds for teacher preparation presumably would allow for DPI consultant position. Restricting it to this use would no longer allow scholarships for UW-Madison Nelson Institute students

What we would prefer not to happen is D1.

3. We have not found a budget paper related to restoring the legislative authority for the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education. There may not be such a paper.

All the budget papers for the week of May 25th are available here: http://legis.wisconsin.gov/lfb/publications/budget/2015-17%20Budget/Pages/Week-of-May-25.aspx  There may be other matters you have an opinion about.

So, we are in a really important lap of the race–not yet the final, but definitely a key lap. I know it’s easy to think somebody else will take care of this, but you are that somebody. You know environmental education matters and we need your voice again. Please email or call members of Joint Finance even if you have done so before.  Please encourage your colleagues, friends, family, volunteers, suppliers, customers…especially those who are constituents of JFC members…to advocate.

And it is also time to start saying “thank you”   No matter how this turns out, a call, email or note of thanks to Representative Mursau (WEEB member who has been instrumental in this effort), ideally prior to Friday would be appropriate.

Please email your legislators even if you’ve done so before.  We need to make enough noise that they know we are here. The next few days are the “count days” when they tally how many people care about this issue. We need to have the numbers. Click here for an email template!

Thanks for all your previous efforts….but we really need to push hard now. And, we’ll need to be ready to rally again when we hear the DPI position and WCEE are going to be considered.
